What is Art?

Last night at Laundry Love Project, I got to meet and film some new characters for the film. I also got some nice shots of laundry swirling in the washers and dryers. As I was filming a little girl looking into the glass of a washer, I thought how creative this shot was and I showed her how it looked in the viewfinder after I was done. She said how pretty it was. When you see the film you will have a chance to see for your self “how pretty” it is. It got me to thinking about something… “What is art?”

I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. Sometimes I see “installation art” or an abstract modern painting and ask myself “what’s the point?” To the creator of the work, there may (or may not) be some deep philosophical contextual meaning. It might take me years to develop an understand, or at least appreciation for some forms of so-called art. Don’t get me wrong, I want all artists to succeed and I am willing to understand, I am only saying I just don’t get it sometimes.

So, here’s what I am getting at… I think it would be interesting to do a segment in the film called “What is Art?” I woke up this morning from a dream where these words were floating above the ground at Ventura Beach. Actually stacked…

WHAT
IS ART

So, I am thinking about doing a series of homeless man-on-the-street interviews with this question. I am wondering how the average person living without shelter sees art and beauty. I find so many things beautiful in them as I am interviewing them. I would like to find out what they see when they look at the world and specifically when the see art.

Well, Feb 2nd is another occurrence for LLP. I will be there again to shoot more footage so I can have enough to tell the story there. I love what they have been doing. It started a few years ago with a simple idea… “Let’s collect quarters and detergent and start cleaning the clothes of those living in shelters, motels, cars, garages and on the streets”. Memorial Service

Today I was in Ventura for the memorial service. In 2009, 28 people died homeless in Ventura, CA. Their names were read at a memorial service today, Dec 21st, the longest night. The gazebo was crowded and the lawn was strewn with people here remember those that has passed this year. Above is a short sequence from the memorial service that will be re-cut shortly. Homeless Person’s Memorial Service

At least 21 residents of Ventura County have died homeless since the first of the year — the youngest was 36 and the oldest was 71.

Their names will be among those read at the Homeless Person’s Memorial Service on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Plaza Park, across from the post office in downtown Ventura which I plan on attending.

The Box

This week I got a licensing agreement from Johnny Flynn‘s reps. The are going to let us use his song “The Box” in the movie. The license allows “up to it’s entirety”. So, we have our first song. Are you a songwriter and have anything to submit?

Below is a very cool acoustic version to the song. I like it because he is walking around with his dobro and you can see a bit of Johnny’s personality as he sings The Box. Click play… there is a LONG intro that is not really part of the song… IT actually starts at around 2:10 mark.
